Time for a Reboot?

The Last GT Fighter

I swear this is the last thread I'm making this week (After my next one I do in another sub-forum, I promise)

On to the topic at hand. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z have been around for years. Goku's been hardcore since 84. In December it'll be 30 years old. And I love the franchise, I really do. I just think about it in comparison to other franchises that I love, like Star Wars, Transformers, Spider-man, and even the Mario Brothers, and notice that... Dragon Ball hasn't changed at all in 30 years. Now don't get me wrong, it's evolved, that's true. We're still getting interesting original content, but I'm starting to feel like the main continuity is getting a little strained. We have a whole 'nother movie coming out next year that has to fit in between Battle of Gods and the end of the Kid Buu Saga, right before GT. And anytime a video game comes out, I go to the story mode and realize I've been playing the exact same story for 12 years now (Budokai 1 anyone?)

It's starting to get a touch, old and stale trying to force things into the same canon and continuity. And have you seen some canon fights? It gets depressing. Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't get hyped about new content updating the DB universe, it's a timeless anime classic and the whole reason modern shounen is as awesome as it is. But in this last Battle of Gods movie, knowing that it's a prequel, it was hard to be invested in the probable "danger" or "peril" it was actually just 90 minutes of nostalgia and explosions. That's not a bad thing, that's why I watch the Transformers Movies. It's like watching a 2 hour Transformers cartoon in real life, I love that!

And I know the last time Dragonball split from the "main timeline" with Evolution... it was pretty nasty. Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun Fat and James Wong all have special spots in HIFL for their involvement. But I'm saying something small. Like an Ultimate universe? Marvel did the same thing with it's titles, like Ultimate Spider-man and Ultimate Fantastic Four. There were obviously classic characters, but reimagined a bit. They had the old story lines, but with new twists, they could add new characters, and they weren't constrained by the main 616 continuity or timeline so they could go new directions and do new creative things with these amazing characters. There'd be new weekly updates, things could actually change, and the multiverse shoe-horn that Beerus put at the end of the last movie MIGHT have some sense made of it.

Dragon Ball Multiverse actually did a bit of good with the idea, only it still tried to be slight changes on the same main timeline instead of having different versions of the characters. Damn good fan fiction, but not a game changer.

So after all that, what do you think? Do we need to take a Spider-man or Transformers approach to DBZ? Would you like seeing new original content that isn't involved with the main story? New characters, new places? What's your thought?

That sounds like a cool idea, though I'm not sure that they would go through with it.

Maybe they would start making movies that take place Post-Z? Then Oob would get more character development, and the stakes would be higher, since we're not sure if everyone's gonna make it out okay.

Or they could just form another alternate timeline or something.

I think they should leave the series untouched albeit the new movies they make every now and then. Theirs no reason for needing a post-EoZ story. DB ended in the 90's and it should stay that way.

I would like to see a Manga Reboot and it done right this time. So, really do a reboot... keep all the same characters but this time makes the more logical decisions and make all of the plot make sense from beginning to end. Like reboot DB and DBZ but this time bring in the Saiyan Genealogy from the beginning and take the story from there, but the name Saiyan still isn't used until Z, but just keep the Zenkai's very small until Z comes around. In Z keep Kakarrot dead after Cell this time and have other people be the hero's this time and cut out everything that isn't necessary.

I know that sounds too much like what we have now, but if doe right I think it can work and would be better than the original.

I don't even see why a reboot is necessary. It'll just make things worse IMO.

Why can't the fans of this series just let this series rest in peace?

So the plan isn't to truly continue the series right now? I thought it was.

Because fans want more.

I'm cool with is as long as it's like a brand new series. Call it a reboot if you like but it wouldn't want it to simply be a rehash of the old anime. Kai is already here for that. It would need to be a brand new story similar to GT.

Yeah, more of what I'm saying is more like a touch up on the original.

I wouldn't mind seeing another Universe with the same Characters, but it all takes places around the Movie Characters, but take everything in a completely different direction than what the Movies are.

Exactly what I'm thinking. Like I said, personally I want a Dragon Ball like the ultimate marvel universe. Same basic character set, pays homage to the original and keeps the spirit, but otherwise is original and does things on its own. Like in the Saiyan saga, instead of three, why not a marauding gang of Saiyans? Sure it makes the Saiyans seem a bit wimpier, but the Z-Fighters deaths would be a bit more badass (assuming they die). Then they take Cooler's whole empire on or something. Just have fun without having to follow the exact same story.

Sometimes, more isn't better.

Personally, I don't want to see an SSJ9 Goku VS LSSJ8 Broly but that's just me.

I think if AT had handled Broli, we would have a more of an exact scale on his power and I don't think he would be overpowered either.

Personally, I wish Broli had been in the Manga, because he would have been handled better.

He wouldn't be any better IMO. Not even sure if those kind of villains would be in a Toriyama work.

NO! Dragon Ball is fine as it is. We don't need it to be reworked. The only thing that needs a reboot is GT.

no.
sometimes stories need to end. even the good ones.

anyway there is no one to write it. Toriyama of 2014 is no longer Toriyama of 84-95, his style has evolved drastically over the years like every other artist. i really dont want to see DB with a new style.

If this happened regardless of how good it was everyone would just complain about it. So I doubt it would ever happen.
